This is a page dedicated to Drill Horses that have served more then a few
years and more than a few riders!
Some have retired and others keep coming back!
We just wanted to show our appreciation to them and their owners!!

Willy

I have been a part of this club for 20 years in one way or another.  I have to tell you how lucky Collette has been to have me as her “Willie”.

I started out by teaching Heidi the ropes on being a drill team member.  Heidi grew up and went on to college.  Since Heidi was gone I allowed Collette, Heidi’s mom, to graduate to me.  Let me tell you, this has been no easy chore.  I just get her going on another horse, and bam she pulls me out of the pasture which I enjoy immensely and she puts me through the paces.  I am really hard to catch, getting a little long in the tooth and you’d think she would get the picture.  But noooo, even if she doesn’t need me, she finds someone else to ride me.  I have been a flag horse, a middle horse, a spinning horse, a relay-race horse and even a barrel horse.  Now that Collette has retired from banking she is working full time riding and training horses.  Guess what?  Who do you suppose she uses to give lessons on?  You guessed it, ME.   And this hurts just to say it, but last year I took part in a quad drill.  I had to wear this really tacky tie, shirt and hat, plus grandpa pants.  The outfit wouldn’t have been too bad but the 3 other horses were dressed as grannies and one was a gelding.  I have never been so humiliated.

The only thing I haven’t been is a mom and if she could figure that one out I would have been that too.  They won’t let me hold any offices but I do hold quite a status with the other horses.  I can tell them, “Remember when the drill was slower, all you had to remember was go right or left, or just follow the horse in front of you.”  Now they think they are going faster, are fancier, and more complicated.  I guess maybe they are or maybe I am just getting older and crankier.  Collette has ridden lots of horses through her 20 plus years but you notice she always comes back to her “Willie”! I don’t know how long that girl plans to keep this up but I AM THINKING OF RETIRING!!!!

Chicaro

Tori and Chicaro in 2004                                          Robin and Chicaro in 1989

Chicaro was first used in drill when he was 4 years old.  He was great the first year!!  Then in the second year he had a few different crashes and he soon became a little shy of the cross through.  He started bucking Robin off when ever he was scared.  She rode him for 10 more years until she found another horse that was not so inclined to buck.  She then retired him to trail horse.  In 2002, after Chicaro had been sitting out at pasture except for the occasional trail ride, Tori had some problems with the horse she was riding.  Robin offered Chicaro up for use.  Of course she said if some thing happened it wasn't her fault.  Chicaro (a little tired of sitting around in pasture) was more then happy to be back in drill.  Tori rode him for 2 years with out one buck.  He did shy away in some of the crosses until he was sure no one would hurt him but he did a great job.  Then at the end of 2003 he was standing tied up to the trailer and a horse next to him pulled back which in turn set him off.  He ended up pulling the trailer right off the blocks.  He hurt his neck and didn't get to finish the year.  Now Tori is coaching and Chicaro is giving her niece and nephew rides around the pasture.  He even let Mikah her 5 year old niece ride him in a parade.  He is now 19 and he has decided that he wants to hang out at pasture with his little buddy Valor (an Arabian that was a twin).
